Charity Spotlight - Books for Keeps
For the Community category, IntelliGRACS Group, Inc. has selected a charity that's very near and dear to our hearts - Books For Keeps! Books for Keeps started as an effort to help one little girl who loved to read but didn't own a single book. It's grown into a grassroots movement to end "summer slide".
Books for Keeps works to address causes of poor reading achievement in children, particularly those causes that relate to the accessibility of reading material. They provide books and other reading material to children whose reading opportunities outside of school might otherwise be limited due to income, geography, or other factors. They foster a love of reading and encourage recreational reading by providing popular, fun reading material, to develop and maintain reading skills that will benefit a child throughout his or her education.
The Books for Keeps Story:
Books for Keeps started as one woman's effort to help a second-grader who loved to read but didn't own a single book. In the process of inquiring about how to help, Melaney Smith learned of a well-documented achievement gap between children from low-income families and their middle-income peers. Much of this gap, known by researchers and educators as Summer Slide, is due simply to limited access to reading material.
Melaney thought to herself "Why doesn't somebody do something about this?" and quickly realized "I am somebody; I can do something." She decided on a simple strategy: give them books. She shopped thrift stores and yard sales, and gave 3 books each to 80 second-graders just in time for summer. Her efforts quickly grew into a grassroots movement to provide books to Athens children. Books began to arrive from around the US, Canada, and beyond, and Books for Keeps was born.
What They Do:
Books for Keeps targets elementary schools where 90% or more of students qualify for free/reduced meals. The books are set up in the school library and children come in, one class at a time, to choose the books they want to own. In May 2011, Books for Keeps distributed over 12,000 books (12 books per child to 1,000 elementary school children in three schools in Athens, GA). This will be the third year in a row they have distributed books to Alps Elementary School students, where the project first started. In addition to the elementary school program, Books for Keeps will distribute approximately 3,000 more books in pilot tests at a middle school and high school. Books for Keeps is also testing a program to give baby books to teen moms and encourage reading to infants, and seeking opportunities to create supplemental programs for the neediest or most reluctant of young readers.
